Was an oil well driller. Drilled a well near the Westminster Presbyterian church in Sparta, Illinois. It is now a capped gas well. Was one of fourteen children, 7 girls and 7 boys. From eastern Ohio and/or western Pennsylvania?
Grew up in a 21 room house in St. Petersburg, Pennsylvania that had a fireplace in every room. It was later made into a nursing home.
Confirmed into St Peters Reformed Church in St. Petersburg, Pa on May 13, 1871. D.O. Shoemaker, Pastor.
Quote from letter by Thelma Scott:
"Barney V. Ritts drilled oil and gas wells throughout the midwest... Okla., S. Ill, Kansas, etc. They lived in Sparta during the winter months so they could go to school...after their mother, Anna, died at 33 yrs...they stayed with the McIlroy sisters...(two old maids)... In the summer they went with their Dad (Barney) and lived in a two-room tent. Irene was only thirteen when her mother died. When she was 17 yrs. old she married John Allen Snyder... then her three brothers came to live with them. That's why these three seem like brothers to me instead of uncles."
Anna died and Barney remarried a younger woman, primarily to have someone to take care of his children while he was away oil well drilling. Kids hated her and went to live with Irene when she married John Snyder.
Barney is buried in Caledonia Cemetary in Sparta, Illinois.

Barney may have died as a result of some industrial accident while working in Oklahoma
Barney was a member of the Sparta chapter of the Modern Woodmen of America society
Barney was also a member of the Elberon Lodge, in Sparta, of the Knights of Pythias.

The Modern Woodmen of America is a fraternal benefit society organized in 1883 by Joseph Cullen Root. It began as an all male group, but in 1895 organized a women's group, the Royal Neighbors of America, which had existed previously as an unofficial female auxiliary to the Modern Woodmen. The organization and its local groups, called "camps," held social events and carried out benevolent work. Assessments of and benefits to members were an important part of the organization's purpose. The Modern Woodmen of America exists today as a legal reserve fraternal assessment society and the Woodman of the World is a Fraternal Life Insurance Society.

The Knights of Pythias is a fraternal organization founded at Washington, DC, on 19 February 1864.
The Knights of Pythias was the first fraternal organization to receive a charter under an act of the United States Congress. It was founded by Justus H. Rathbone, who had been inspired by a play by the Irish poet John Banim about the legend of Damon and Pythias. This legend illustrates the ideals of loyalty, honor and friendship that are the center of the order.
The order has over 2,000 lodges in the United States and around the world, with a total membership of over 50,000 in 2003. Some lodges meet in structures referred to as Pythian Castles.

"Creek County is unique in many ways:
First, early Federal Court House marriage records, beginning in 1902, were sent at statehood, to the Muskogee County Court House [address].
Second, in 1922, because of the large amount of Indian Oil Lease litigation, TWO other Courts of Record were established by the State Legislature.
These Courts of Record are at Bristow and Drumright, and are still in operation. (Aug 2004) They have Marriage Records, which are not in the main Creek County Court House (at Sapulpa). No effort has been made to co-ordinate them. So, if Sapulpa tells you they have no listing, try the two other locations."
