Hector William Vaughan, born in Ireland, ran Vaughan's First Premium Gallery located at 18 Third Street by 1869 through 1877. Hector died in 1878 and by 1879 Brown and Karras ran the studio still called Vaughan's First Premium Gallery.
Not sure what year this was taken, I would estimate his age as between 30 and 40, so sometime between 1877 and 1888.

Thank you for the picture of Alexander McCaughan! I will show it to my Dad and ask him if he has the same picture. That would be really interesting if he does!
I made a typing error in my first email to you. My great grandfather is Alexander McCaughan, my grandfather is Hugh C. McCaughan, my father is Hugh A. McCaughan. My maiden name was Marilyn Kay McCaughan. I grew up in Kittanning, Pa. I am 58 years old.
My cousin, Joe, emailed me with questions about the family for me to ask my Dad and Dad has been looking through old papers and pictures etc. My Dad has found some background information. It was Joe's request about family history etc. and our discussions about whether or not there are any male McCaughan descendants to carry on the name that prompted me to use the Google Search Engine to look up the name McCaughan -- which ultmately led me to you.
I am going to Carbon Copy my cousin Joe my correspondence to you.
      To answer your questions:
Alexander McCaughan born: 1845 died: 1921
Martha McCaughan born: 1844 died: 1917
They came from Antrim County, Ireland.

Hugh Ansley McCaughan said that Alexander was referred to as ALEC. He does not know how they spelled it, but they pronounced it as Alec.
Hugh A. McCaughan was 5 when his grandfather, Alec, died.

Alexander and Martha and their family moved to Pittsburg, PA from Randolph County, IL

Both Alexander and Martha are buried in Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburgh, PA. Hugh A and his brother, Don McCaughan, visited their graves. There were no stones but there was a plate. There is an administration building at the Allegheny Cemetery that houses the records. He had an interest in horses and working with horses.

The McCaughan family used to chuckle about the time Alexander gave his two older grandsons a coin each. He gave the older boy, Roland, a 1/2 dollar and the younger boy, Robert, a smaller coin perhaps a nickel -- at any rate the younger boy looked at his smaller coin and threw it out the window!

REF: International Records: Index to Griffith's Valuation of Ireland, 1848-1864
This data set, an index to one of Ireland's premier genealogical resources, Griffith's Valuation, references approximately one million individuals who occupied property in Ireland between 1848 and 1864. The Griffith's Valuation, or Primary Valuation of Ireland, was executed under the direction of Sir Richard Griffith to determine the amount of tax each person should pay towards the support of the poor within their poor law union. This involved determining the value of all privately held lands and buildings in rural as well as urban areas to figure the rate at which each unit of property could be rented year after year. The resulting survey was arranged by barony and civil parish with an index to the townlands appearing in each volume. The original volumes of the survey are held in the National Archives, Dublin and Public Record Office, Belfast. In addition to providing the name of the householder, Griffith's Valuation provides a map reference number to help you identify and perhaps locate property.
