    • Obituary of Leonard Chesteen Wood
Leonard Chesteen Wood, the oldest son of Samuel Francis and Effie Mae Hoblett Wood, was born at Corning, Iowa January 3, 1877 and died December 30, 1960 at the age of 83 years, 11 months and 27 days.
He moved to Alden at the age of one year and spent all of his life in Alden, except when he was out on earth moving work. He received his first patent on a dirt moving machine on his 21st birthday. Most of his life has been spent designing building and using earth moving machines.
He was united in marriage to Clara Myrtle Bredenkamp in East St. Louis in 1912 and to this union three sons were born.
He has been a member of the Methodist Church since his early days.
His survivors are: three sons: Leonard, Keith, and Mervel and twelve grandchildren, all of Oregon, Illinois; two brothers: Keith and Howard of Alden, Iowa; two sisters: Bessie Huston of Alden and Mary Johnston of St. Louis, Missouri. He was preceded in death by three sisters: Luella Palmer, Susie Fenstermacher, and Carrie Fisher, and a brother Guy.

      Other Notes from Mervel:
Leonard was called "Pop" by his sons and family, but was also known as Chess or Chessie by his classmates and friends. He attended Alden School to the 6th or 8th grade. Obtained his first Patent on a dirt loader at age 21.

Pop played the violin (fiddle). He and mom would both play or she would play the piano. He could really get going ... even playing it between his legs. When Pop was out in Colorado on a road job, mom travelled out to visit and stayed at a hotel there. She started playing the piano for something to do and soon a crowd gathered to listen to her. The manager of the hotel wanted to hire her to play but she turned him down.

Chess took over payments on a car that his brother, Guy, had purchased. It was an American Underslung probably about 1916. It was an expensive car - about $3,000 (about $82,000 today). One day (probably about 1919) Chess was driving it with Leonard and Chess' brother, Keith, inside and the car went off the side of the road where the ground was very soft and the soft ground pulled it further into the ditch and the car rolled throwing everyone out. Leonard was fine - he was standing on the side of the road, but Keith broke his collar bone. The car was wrecked and over the years one of the headlights and the magneto were kept as a souvenoirs. This headlight and magneto are now in the possession of Doug Wood.
