      When planning to marry, the prospective groom took out a bond from the clerk of the court in the county where the bride had her usual residence as surety that there was no legal obstacle to the proposed marriage. On file in the North Carolina State Archives are 170,000 marriage bonds, covering the years 1741-1868. These records were abstracted by the Works Progress Administration.       In 1865 Anson, Samuel, and Grandison dissolved their partnership in the saw mill. On their agreement paper, Anson, Samuel, Agnes Ann Wood signed. Witness by Gil (?) Franklin, a brother to Agnes Ann.

      "During the succeeding years, from 1847 to 1860, the population of the town increased very rapidly. The first mill (saw) was built in 1848 by Anson, Grandison, Enoch, and Samuel Wood, and W. Shepard, and was located on section II, near the head of Rush Creek. In 1850 George Squires built a furniture factory on section 3. In 1846, a blacksmith shop was started on section 21, by Samuel Claybaugh."

      Grandison and Electa's gravestone was put up in the 1940's by Uncle Keith and Uncle Howard. They are probably not buried at this spot. They may be buried under the "pump house" in the cemetery.

      Grandison and Electa were founding members of the Alden Congregational Church.

It has changed proprietors repeatedly, and is now the property of John Richardson, but has not been operated for several years.
